While some erect idols, we tear them down. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God — 2 Cor. 10:5 NIV.

In Gideon’s day, it was Baal and Ashtoreth that needed to be booted from national psyche. Today it is greed, materialism, pleasure-seeking, alcohol, etc. People resonate with American Idol because its the rags-to-riches, discovered-by-Hollywood storyline.

In all honesty, I’ve never seen an episode of this show that buzzes with our zeitgeist. Nor do I want to. I think, though, I would enthusiastically watch a spoof titled “American Idol Smasher.” But as it stands, no such is likely to materialize outside of your prayer closet.

Far from the crowds, far from the voting, far from the excitement, in your prayer closet and mine history is REALLY made.

  1. A lot of “success seminars” are actually just lessons in idol-building!

I never liked that program because of the title.

I was moved by the caption of Edgar Cervantes. I would rather hear him than American Idol any day.

  4. I used to like watching American Idol, back when Simon Cowell was on the show. He gave people a dose of reality they needed and should have gotten from friends and parents that lacked the courage to share the truth. But now it’s an interesting lesson in self-gratification and self-indulgence. I like that the idea originally was to give unknowns a chance at sharing their talent, but it seems a far cry from that idea anymore. I haven’t watched it in years. I love movies and media and am fearing the day is fast approaching when everything on TV will be too sinful to watch. *sigh* I’m hoping other media sources that aren’t Hollywood will step in and fill the void. Like I really appreciate that mega church, Sherwood I think, that put out movies like Courageous. I hope technology helps us see more of that kind of entertainment soon.

But yeah, there’s way too much focus on just getting famous and not enough focus on the actual hard work for success.

  5. Have moved on to “The Voice.” All contestants seem to have a hard luck past, and this show gives them hope????
