Class clown no more. Today Juan Guillermo is a famous poet.

Editor´s Note: Juan Guillermo was a class clown. This article, which traces his less-than-stellar start at my school in Guatemala, the Liceo Bilingüe La Puerta, to international poet. In truth, you shouldn’t underestimate your impact. To my many English-only readers, sorry that this one goes out in its original publishing language.

Hoy Juan Guillermo Lera, como poeta, es conocido internacionalmente, puesto que tuvo la oportunidad de viajar recientemente a México y leer, en diferentes escenarios, parte de su trabajo escrito.

¿Quién hubiera esperado que llegara tan lejos aquel chico que cursó quinto y sexto primaria del colegio cristiano el Liceo Bilingüe “La Puerta”?

“El Liceo, debo decir, me brindó, hasta ese momento, un aprendizaje bastante sólido del idioma español, cual no recibí en la escuela en mis años anteriores de primaria” – dijo. – “Ya había leído algunas obras en casa, sí, pero nunca en la escuela, nunca en grupo, nunca con la instrucción y el dinamismo de un profesor. Esto me marcó mucho.” – enfatizó con un dejo de entusiasmo.

Leyó Romeo y Julieta y Los de abajo (aquella novela de la revolución mexicana), entre otras obras literarias, dentro de las aulas  del Liceo.

Ahora el joven de 23 años de edad  es invitado para impartir talleres de lectura y redacción en el Instituto Tecnológico de la delegación Gustavo Madero de la Ciudad de México. No está de más mencionar que el centro ITGAM II es una de las sedes del famoso, y muy importante  centro de estudios técnicos universitarios el Instituto Tecnológico Nacional.

Con el apoyo de otros estudiantes y poetas jóvenes,  Guillermo también tomó parte activa en  talleres de poesía  en la prestigiosa Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Testimonio de una alumna del Liceo Bilingue La Puerta en Guatemala

Crecí tratando de tener mi mente abierta, sintiendo cada cosa mala como que era buena.

Sentía que todo estaba bien porque creía que el mal y el bien eran iguales, pues de las dos maneras diferentes personas llegaron a la felicidad. Yo estaba ciega de lo que de verdad estaba pasando a mi alrededor.

Tenía quince años y todo me daba igual. Creía que podía hacer lo que yo quería sin importar nada y cometí errores, quizás no tan grandes ni graves, pero tampoco me hacen sentir orgullosa.

Entonces conocí a una persona, el que es ahora mi novio, justamente cuando todo en mi cabeza se revolvía más de lo que ya estaba. En este momento yo sé que él me detuvo de hacer cosas peores.

Conocí a su familia y ver a su familia unida, feliz y sobre todo cristiana me ayudó a querer ser igual.

Siempre creía que Dios existía, aunque me decía a mí misma que no era así. Y dije varias veces que lo buscaría cuando lo necesitara. Todos me decían que estaba mal, pero simplemente creo que era la necesidad de llevarles la contraria a todos y así lograr la satisfacción de dejarlos en duda de sí mismas.

No sé cómo llegué al colegio el Liceo Bilingüe La Puerta. Me inscribieron y creo que desde allí Dios me estaba llamando y me llevó al lugar donde Él me quería, pues también me detuvo de hacer cosas malas y humillantes. Para seguir leyendo, haz clic aquí.

The truth is I’m bilingual, and this young lady got saved as a result of the Christian school in Guatemala that my wife and I founded almost 20 years ago. The school exists primarily to bring people to Christ, though it is a regular private academic school.

The beauty of children

One of the strong points of the ministry in Guatemala is the school and its children. If you save a 40-year-old, he will serve Christ for 40 years (supposing he lives to 80). But if you save a 12-year-old, he will serve Christ 68 years.

Of course, it’s good to get the old guy saved; he needs it as much as the young guy. But there are certain advantages to working with youth. You also help them avoid so many sins and destruction if they learn to live wisely from a young age. Well, that has been our philosophy behind the Christian school, El Liceo Bilingue La Puerta. We’ve seen some great testimonies through the years.

There’s great joy in seeing the smiling faces: so many kids needing and receiving love. My friend, John Mira, is here with me. He’ll be preaching, and I’m translating. He preached to the junior highers in Bible class. It gives them the chance to accept Christ and point their lives in a positive direction.

Friends, fun and revival

I got one assist. That’s kinda amazing because I’m 47 playing against teens.

I learned soccer while being a missionary when I was 35 years old, a late breakout into the sport. It’s not easy to outrun those kids but a lot of fun.

I’m visiting the church my wife and I founded in Guatemala. By playing soccer with the kids, I realize we have the seeds of revival. Even though not all these kids attend church, they come for soccer. They have a strong mental association with their school, a ministry of the church. When they get to a moment of desperation, they’ll know where to go to find God. They have a strong reference point of God.

Some of the kids come to church, which is extraordinary because kids don’t want to have anything to do with God, typically.

After playing for a couple of hours, I gave them all my testimony: raised in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley in relative comfort but lonely and empty. Only Jesus filled my heart.

More than 40 people were healed miraculously. Pastor Charlie Forman has an anointing for praying for the sick. A lady with stage-4 pancreatic cancer got up and went to her daughter’s wedding. A lady with a walker doesn’t need her walker. One leg grew out 3 inches. A 75-year-old with back pain got down on the floor and did three pushups to check if he was in fact healed.

People got saved in almost every service. Youths came! The discouraged were encouraged.

We played soccer and enjoyed the best of Guatemala cuisine (beans and rice with Jesus Christ forever! oh, and they gave me some tasty cinnamon buns.).

The Liceo Biliungue La Puerta school is doing well too!

The best thing was just the sense I got that 16 years of labor were not in vain. There are people who thank me for changing the direction of their lives. People are still getting saved.

It makes me want to keep going for Jesus.
